In the summer of 2007 David Emerson needed to raise money to support the continued development of Beating Myeloma. He wanted the fundraiser to represent his values of social networking and a healthy lifestyle, talking and walking. Though difficult for David, walking has become a favorite exercise – and he was determined to do something that would inspire others to take action. He solicited sponsorships, often at $1 a lap, and raised $1,500. This year, as the Galen Foundation and Beating Myeloma grow, David decided to expand the walk-a-thon to a team of supporters who want to encourage their own good health while helping others.
The Galen Foundation is an organization founded by multiple myeloma survivor David Emerson to empower individuals who battle myeloma and other chronic diseases to manage their health and improve their lives. Beating Myeloma is the flagship program of the Galen Foundation. The goal of the Galen Foundation is to become a “Facebook†or “MySpace†for cancer survivors.
Instead of raising money for research, the Galen Foundation works to help those affected by multiple myeloma manage the scary and intimidating process of getting through cancer. Studies have found that “interactive health communication,†what Beating Myeloma does, helps survivors live better, longer lives.
We're asking you to help myeloma survivors like David by becoming a sponsor for the Second Annual Talk-the-Talk, Walk-the-Walkathon to benefit Beating Myeloma. The Walkathon will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 10am to noon at the University Upper School track. If you have questions, or if you would like to walk yourself, please simply contact us via email.
