Curcumin experience
Rich Nichols sent this email to me today as a response to my post on the MMA list about the curcumin patient study-
"I'm not really in the study or poll or whatever, but here is my experience so far f/w/i/w:
I'd been taking 10 of revlimid a day and 2mg of velcade on days 1 and 8 of a 21 day cycle. The revlimid was battering my counts pretty well, so it was dropped to 5 a day. At the same time I started taking life extension super bio curcumin, which they says has 6-7 times the punch of regular curcumin. During the first cycle after that, I worked up from 2-4 capsules, and my free lite test increased only a little, about 6%. For the second cycle I took 8 capsules, but my free lite test increased over 50% to the highest score I've had since I started having that test about 4 years ago.
Hope others do better.
Rich Nicholls"
Several important points here-
1) oncs continue to lower doses of thal, rev, vel and dex-
2) while it appears that curcumin supplementation is not helping Rich manage his mm, it is possible
that the curcumin is not getting into Rich's system properly-bioavailability-
3) I responded to Rich's email asking for clarification on some of his points.

Interesting - I guess my experience was similar.
In five weeks on "regular" C3 Complex curcumin my numbers dropped, not a lot but enough to give hope. Even the FreeLite test showed a drop. Â
Then I changed the regimen so that 1.6 mg of the 8 mg was LEF Super Bio-curcumin. After nine more weeks, all my numbers had jumped back up again. The FreeLite test showed a 28% jump over that period, and for the first time ever, light chains were detecteed in my urine, though at a very low level.
I'm still using the LEF curcumin as 1.6 mg of the total 8 mg, but now I wonder. Maybe it's not as simple as just bioavailability - maybe the LEF curcumin is different in some other important way.

You can probably expoect some bouncing around. How do you feel ?
You may want to add the Poly-mva 4 corners protocol as additional nutritional support and see how your numbers come in on that after about 2 months.
I believe the optimum curcumin dosage depends on whether you are taking it my itself or in combination with thalidomide, Revlimid, etc. Certainly if you are taking curcumin by itself many have shown that you may need many grams of curcumin to keep the myeloma in check. However, in combination with thalidomide or Revlimid the optimum dose may be as little as 0.5 gram (one half gram), or least that has been my experience.  Of those on thalidomide or Revlimid you may want to try this kind of a much lower dose for a month and see for yourself. My half of gram is curcumin is without Bioprene. I am now on Americas Finest brand of Sabinsa C3 Complex without Bioprene. The Bioprene is added to interfere with a liver enzyme P450 which may help curcumin bioavailability but unknown is its effect on thalidomide, Revlimid, etc. So you may be interfering with the bioavailability of these other drugs. While we are talking about P450, stay totally away from grapefruit juice which also interferes with P450.

Terry, thank you for your post about curcumin with Velcade, etc.
I am on my third course of Velcade, four weeks on and one week off. (Dex has been reduced from 20 mg to 10 mg)  However, after my second course, I took 1 to 1 1/2 grams of Naxtra curcumin (no bioprene) daily during the interval. My IgA numbers after the four weeks were stable (1550 before and 1600 after).  I am planning to do the same after my fourth infusion of Velcade next Tuesday.  I hope perhaps to extend the "vacation" as long as my numbers stay stable.  I plan to purchase the America's Finest brand this week so I'll be ready for next Tuesday.  Do you think the 500mg daily would be a good dose, or shall I keep the 1 gram daily during this interval.  If possible, I'll try to get the opinion of Dr. Aggarwal, but he's not always available so quickly.  I am hopeful to keep off the Velcade for as long as possible to avoid side effects. So far I haven't had significant additional neuropathy, but I don't want to chance it. Best regards from nutty but proud NYC.                          Shirley

Shirley,
I have not been on Velcade so I can not talk from experience. However, with thalidomide I saw no difference increasing curcumin beyond 500 mg up to 2 grams. However, since you are trying to compare Sabinsa vs the other brand, the best way would be to use the same 1 gram to 1 1/2 grams/day. However, I would not take more than the 1 1/2 grams/day.

Terry,  Many thanks for your speedy reply.  I purchased one bottle of the America's Finest (Cost: $20+change).  Will start taking it next Wednesday 1 or 1 1/2 grams daily. Yes, I'd like to be able to compare it to the Naxtra brand, which is only $15 per bottle of 90.  Will give a report in a few weeks.
