Margaret, what is your opinion on this study?
Hi David, check out this more recent (just published) study on the curcuminoids: http://carcin.oxfordjourn... By the way, I have the full study in my possession and would be glad to forward it to you or anybody else. I still have to read it, but plan to write a post about it at some point (I am on holiday for the next couple of weeks, but have access to my blog and e-mail). Take care,
Margaret, Florence, Italy
Margaret-
I knew that you would be the right person to turn to on current curcumin info- I will read the study asap-
David
Margaret,
I was not able to view the /link that you posted recently about the curcuminoids latest study.
I would appreciate your sending me the study if it is available
Steve
David, I will send you this recent study as soon as I have a second. And Steve, I would gladly send you the study, too, but I need your e-mail for that. The easiest thing to do would be for you to leave me a comment on my blog, and that way I will have your e-mail address (since I cannot post mine here). For reasons of privacy, only I can see your address, no worries! Thanks, Margaret, (on holiday in Avellino, near Naples), Italy

Subject: curcumin & bioperine
I've been getting curcumin and bioperine from the Sabinsa, as suggested by
Dr. Aggarwal after Erwin's dx 11/04. Recently, the company has produced a
cap
containing both. Erwin's primary onc., Dr. Richardson of Dana-Farber has
ok'd
this.
Erwin's SMM has remained stable and requiring no treatment other than
monthly
Aredia (now reduced to every other month).
I've been taking the curcumin/bioperine for my mild psoriasis and have
needed
to use steroidal lotions, ointments and shampoo less often.

Curcumin in Oatmeal
Margaret recently posted some information indicating that the efficacy of curcumin may be improved by heating it. I decided to try some curcumin in my morning oatmeal, to see if that was at all edible.
I'm happy to say that it was edible. In fact, to my surprise, curcumin didn't change the taste of the oatmeal much at all. What does that say about my sense of taste? I don't know. I believe that curcumin may be an important component of the spice turmeric, but it is not the component that imparts flavor! I even used one gram each of two different brands of curcumin. This was only one fourth of my daily eight-gram curcumin dosage, however; it is possible that a full day's dose would impart more flavor (and thus be more objectionable). It did make the oatmeal very yellow, which is not very appealing.
The problem is that I don't know how much heat is necessary to improve curcumin's bioavailability, or how much is too much. Maybe nobody knows. I added the curcumin after the oatmeal was cooked, but it would get a lot more heat if added during the cooking as you would do if you were preparing an Indian dish with turmeric.
In the October issue of Life Extesion magazine there are two articles that affect MMers a great deal. One is about a new formulation of curcumin that is greatly more concentrated making it unnecessary to take so many capsules. Also there is an interesting article on stem cell work being done. You can check out this magazine at lifeextension.com, I get this montly in the mail.
About heating curcumin. The heating info was in an abstract (sent to me by one of my blog readers), and I have no idea if it works. You can have a look at my blog for more info. It's true that back in 2006 my IgGs went down almost 20 percent when I was mixing curcumin powder (and I was taking no bioperine, no fish or flaxseed or black cumin oil at the time) in warm coconut milk. I didn't make the heat connection back then. I heated up my coconut milk merely to get rid of the lumps, and also because I noticed the curcumin dissolved faster. And I know someone (with MGUS) who mixes her curcumin in warm milk (not coconut), with good results. That's all I can offer at this point! No real solid proof, just a few studies and conjectures. I will be testing this heating up business in a more scientific way at some point soon.

This is a link to one of the articles in Life Extension Mag on curcumin. This is the issue where the Life Extension Foundation talks about their new more bioavailable form of curcumin. LEF did the studies and they are selling the product- this relationship always makes me nervous. Margaret, what does Dr. Aggarwal say on this form of bioavailable curcumin? David

I am wrong- that link is to the September issue and the article being referred to is in the October issue- I could not find the oct issue on line- sept issue does talk about curcumin though- if you want to read about curcumin, click on the link and search for the word "curcumin"- David
