Resveratrol and curcumin. Brands and absorption.

Margaret asked me about some other brand of resveratrol. Really, I have no idea. All I can tell you is that the person that I consider the most knowledgeable of all on the acor list (he ia a practicing M.D. but does not share this information and read 80,000 pages or mm research reports when he was diagnosed) told me that he would take resveratrol if he could find a good source. He told me that the problem is that it oxidizies easily, so that capsules are worthless.

I looked it up, and I found the researcher from Harvard, essentially did say this. I also did more research, and found some information that he takes the brand that I take, Longevinex, but he cannot say this because of university rules. This could be subtle advertisng, but it is my best guess that this is correct. I have absolutely no idea about other brands, so I will stick with this brand.

Margaret also asked me about Turmeric Force. When I first started to use these product, I found later I found I was using some that had almost no curcumoioids whatsoever. Turmeric Force is not one of those brands, at least according to the bottle. And it seems to be purified in a different way. The company actually told me that their brand does not have to be taken outside of meals because of the way it is made. I doubt this completely, but it may be more easily absorbed by the body.

Also, things BESIDES curcuminoids found in turmeric also have some health benefits, and supposedly Turmeric Force also distills these as well.

And the other problem I have had with other brands, including the one from used at M.D. Anderson is the terrible gas and diarrhea they give me. I do not find this is so with Turmeric Force, but this brand it not cheap, and it does not come with bioperine. So I am only guessing here.

I have found another product that SUPPOSEDLY allows the body to absorb things better than it would with bioperine alone. I will let you know when I find out some more about it.

On another note, I have been giving a friend who has high cholesterol some resveratrol. She just got her results back, and now the M.D. says she needs Lipitor just every other day. She hates Lipitor. She has been only been taking Longevinex once a day with her once-a-day meal, but now she will be taking it 3 times a day. And we also added curcumin (the brands I do not like--oh well) twice a day outside of meals. Maybe this will prevent her
from having to use Lipitor. I had to warn her I am not a doctor nor a herbal specialist, but I also will tell her no B.S. I will not make her any promises this will work. She is highly motivated to use anything but Lipitor or similar drugs.

Margaret also posted a question about absorption of resveratrol. I do not think, at least from the PDF she sent me, this should be a problem. Almost all drugs are absorbed better outside of meals, and even better with bioperine, but really I believe for most things the difference is marginal.

Some have had much greater success taking drugs like cytoxan outside of meals.

So the answer is yes, the resveratrol would be absorbed better outside of meals and even better with bioperine. However, I am not sure if this is good or bad.

What is good for curcumin is not good for everything else. Also, when I bought bioperine from the Vitamine Shoppe, the manager warned me not to take it with prescription drugs, as these are designed to be released into your body in a certain way. I really do not know the specifics of how resveratrol gets into the body.

Interesting post. I will look into the Longevinex brand. And more into resveratrol absorption. If I find out anything of possible general interest, I will post it. Please do the same. Thanks, Alex! Margaret

I had never heard of revertrol until reading this. I just had an auto-transplant for MM and it sounds like revertrol can help me stay in remission. Thanks.

Sherry, you can find more info on resveratrol on my health blog (I actually have a resveratrol page...it needs a bit of updating, but it will give you some basic info): http://margaret.healthblo...

I expect a shipment of Resveratrol 300mg (60 tablets) and curcumin 527 mg (120 tablets) from VitaminShoppe. Please suggest starting dosage for me if possible and let me know if you are following up on keeping records of other people taking this and the reactions to it.
Thank you. The shipment is due to arrive by UPS on Tuesday,May 8. I will also be getting my latest numbers on my IgA on Tuesday as well.

Here is the protocol that I followed: Week 1: one gram of curcumin per day; Week 2: 2 grams; Week 3: 4 grams; Week 4 (and thereafter): 8 grams. My advice: take it with some sort of fat, such as flaxseed or fish oil capsules. As for resveratrol, I take 200 mg a day (Doctor's Best Resveratrol). I also take quercetin (one gram a day), which is supposed to enhance the effect of curcumin. See my blog for more details, if you want (bioavailability and warning pages, in particular): http://margaret.healthblo...

The Curcumin Patient Study (cps) is the system that we are soon to implement to record mmers and curcumin therapy (and reactions to it).   The record of a patient will entail the original diagnosis (mm Igg for instance) the therapy (curcumin and daily dose) side effects, current diagnosis (how have your numbers changed) and a general "issues" box.  And the ability to "read more."  A link to further info.
