I have my husband on 1000 grams or (2) 500 mg of curcumin for his mm, he has smothering myeloma. what should the amount be for him. Thanks a bunch wife.
Marilyn-
I don't think I have ever come across a recommended dose of curcumin that is recommended for either smm, mgus or mm. Therefore we are all on our own here.
As you can read from the other posts about curcumin today, some people suffer side effects with curcumin- eiimination problems or heart burn issues. Bioavailability is also an important issue.
I take 800 mg x 3 each day and my brand of curcumin contains bioprene (pepper) which is proven to increase absorption. I believe that Margaret takes 8 grams each day, other take more, others less. I think that Margaret started with 4 grams, didn't see results, then went to 8 grams daily. Perhaps she will comment on her experience accordingly.
When I began I started taking one capsule a day (800mg x 1) for a week, did not experience any side effects, then took 800 mg x 2 then 800 x 3.
I also supplement with green tea extract, grape seed extract, vit D and fish oil- all shown to have anti cancer properties.

David, how much Vitamin D or is it D3 do you take and how much green tea do you take. Thanks so very much for all your help. Very grateful, Marilyn
Marilyn-
The bottle of green tea extract (Life Extension Foundation) that I buy tells me to take one tablet daily, with or without food. The dose of the tablet is 725 mg. The green tea extract is decaffinated (though the label tells me that each tablet contains 3.6 mg of caffine which is pretty small- I think a cup of Starbucks coffee contains upwards of 150 mg of caffine.)
The vitamin D3 I take, (yes, it's D3) is 1000mg x 2 per day. How much vit. D3 to supplement seems to be debated in the articles and studies that I have read. The bottle says to take one tablet per day. This would be 1000 mg. The label then cautions that "large doses, 1400-2000 mg per day, may cause hypercalcemia. And the label then goes on to caution about kidney disease and vit D toxicity.
As of my last blood test, my vit D, 25-hydroxy levels were 36.9 ng/ml and the "normal" range given by the Lab Corp test takers is 32.00-100.00. Therefore, my blood serum levels of vit D3 is on the low side of the normal range.
My serum calcium level is 9.2 mg/dl with the normal range of 8.5-10.6- I am in the normal range here.
My take on all the above is
1) yes, I need to supplement with vit. D3-I have read many, many, many studies explaining the importance of vit D3. How much to supplement is debated- a daily dose of 2,000 is conservative according to many of the studies that I have read. My blood tests indicate that my vit D3 and serum calcium levels are in the normal range.
2) If you don't have periodic blood tests taken, you are flying in the dark. The key to managing my health/my cancer is to take responsibility. Make my own decisions. However, this means that I need to go to the time, effort and moderate cost of things like blood testing.
This may have been more info that you wanted, Marilyn.

Sarah-
Sorry to read that you have just been diagnosed with mm. However, mm is a very "treatable" form of cancer. There is a great deal of information on this site.
I can't tell you what brand of curcumin is best. Only what I use. You might also want to check with Margaret's Corner blog-
The list of links in the list page of the site contain a wealth of information, including the link to Margaret's Corner.

Hi David, I just relapsed after being stable for 2 years after a stem cell transplant. I have some leisons, even though my IGA numbers weren't that high, last time 797. I had 22 days of radiation for 3 of the larger leisions, and soon to start chemo and dex treatments. I have back aches getting really worried. I have been taking curcumin for the last 2 years. My doctor had told me I have very resistent myeloma. Don,t know which treatment yet iether valcade or revlimid. I wonder if I should keep on taking the curcumin with treatment. thanks for any advice, Marion
Marian-
I am not a professional so all I can do is give you my opinion. I too experienced many lesions and being non-secretory the only way to track them was to have a full body x-ray. Bone pain is certainly worrisome.
If velcade is part of the chemo therapy that you begin, talk to you onc about continuing the curcumin- they work synergistically according to Dr. Aggarwal. Much of his info is in the "articles" section. Or search it.
Like Katherine, I supplement with many things- all that I have read benefit my immune system or have specific anti-myeloma effects. So my experience is to supplement with curcumin and others.
Hang in there, Marian.

Hi David, I went o my Dr. yesterday and he put me on revlimid 25 mg a day 21 days on 7 days off with dex once a week of 20 mg. I'm only 102 pounds so I can't handle more dex. If I'll do good after 6 months a'll go on maintance revlimid without dex. I hope. But he don't want me to take curcumin, they really don't know how it works with revlimid or other supplements until i get off chemo. I'll try and in there and hope it works. Thanks David Marion
Marion-
Revlimid 25 mg a day, 21 days on, 7 days off with dex once a week of 20 mg sounds like dosing that corresponds with a slight frame. Try to each lots of fruits and veggies, get plenty of sleep and exercise when you can.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Just for your info: I supplement with 5,000 IU of vitamin D and have a high normal level. I have no problems with hypercalcemia, bony lesions or kidney problems to date. consider how much I am taking and I still stay in the normal range! My naturopath thinks up to 10,000 iu wouldn't harm; I am not going that high but this is what I do. I do resveratrol, curcumin, reishi, grape seed, alpha lipoic, coqenzyme10,melatonin, low dose naltrexone, bromelain, wobenzyme, quercitin etc etc. I think the most important are D3, curcumin, reishi, resveratrol, wobenzyme,ld naltrexone and DIET (low sugar, veggies and some fruit, whole grain and organic, some fish, no meat, Christmas and thanksgiving ORGANIC turkey only, rare egg.. I am 5 years from Dx and 4 years post second stem cell with no other treatment.
Katherine
Katherine-
Thanks for the info about not only vit D supplementation but all the other things. I get nervous when i think about taking so many different supplements. Over the years I have added something when I have read studies that support its anti myeloma or anti cancer benefits. But I never stop taking anything.
Curcumin was the first supplement- other than general multivitamins. Because I have remained in complete remission I have not gone above 800mg x 2 daily. 15 mg of bioprene is added to each 800mg of curcumin to enhance the bioavailability of the cucumin.
I will increase my daily supplementation of vit D as my last blood test indicated that I am on the low side. I have read that some med professionals do recommend amounts of up to 10,000 a day. I will increase to 1000 x 3 per day.
My daily supplements are almost identical to yours- minus LDN and I no longer take melatonin regularly- I am sleeping well these days.
Thanks, Katherine.

Dr. Aggarwaal told me to supplement Curcumin with 4 grams twice a day...I do at least that and more....I use AOR.ca a company based in Calgary Alberta Canada; they have a great website. They used to have a cancer section but I think Health Canada obviously told them not to do this... You have to search around the site but there are lots of exciting studies, abstracts and details on their web site. I highly recommend them as a company with integrity...
Katherine
Katherine-
I have read that Dr. Aggarwal recommends 4 grams daily- I didn't know it was 4 grams twice daily. I think that's a lot. For those not in complete remission, I think dose is something to consider. As I wrote above, because I supplement with so much other stuff I keep curcumin to 800 x 2 daily.
David
I have been taking 8 grams of curcumin a day for almost four years (in January 2010 it will be 4 years!). I tried taking 4 grams a couple of years ago, but my markers worsened.
Since we are all different, you will just have to see what works for you (take blood tests before and after beginning curcumin is my usual recommendation). It could be that 4 grams might work well for some. I wish I could take less...all those capsules are a real drag, I know what David means...
Hope this helps.

I have been taking Curcumin 500mg. for a couple of months. My numbers are rising. My mm onc (who is from India) thinks Curcumin is not as good as taking the "root"-Turmeric perhaps in warm milk. I haven't tried it yet but will when I finish the capsules. I do like to go to the source when possible. What do you think?
Please inform me if this curcumin will interfere with the chemo tx-?????
Anonymous-
1) I have not read anything that indicates that curcumin interferes with cytoxan or velcade-
2) please confirm this with Margaret of Margaret's Corner-
