I am wondering how many of you have been awarded Social Security Disability???
My Husband is only 53 but his Doctors told him when he was diagnosed 1-24-08 to get his disability papers together - He is Stage 3 and he does very heavy industrial work in Nuclear Power Plants. The Doctors seemed to think he would have no trouble getting approved. We applied in Feburary and just got a letter from Social Security that they are holding the file for at least another 90 days for further evaluation. So he hasn't been denied yet nor has he been approved. He certainly cannont work in his current occupation. His full time job has become going to the Doctor and dealing with various side effects. 200mg of thal and Dex are really taking a toll. Now I am wondering if his application would possibly be denied. He will probably have a auto SCT this summer. Has anyone else applied and been approved or denied? He is hoping eventually to get his MM under control and return to some type of work but don't expect that to happen for at least more than a year.

I was rewarded disability at the age 59. I did hire a lawyer who took one month of my benefit as apayment, and I got it without any denial. The only question I was asked if my cancer was terminal, which it is - we do not have a cure - and they gave it to me instantly. I was told that I did not need a lawyer, They would have to give it to me anyway based on the fact I was terminaly ill.

I have an issue with HUmana, from whom I want to disenroll. Could anybody advice what insurance governig body or institution can I contact, who deals with that kind of issues. I believe I have a strong case, but don't seem to find a right place to turn to.
thank you
Paul
Paul-
Re your issue with Humana. When Medical Mutual of Ohio denied my claims of antineoplaston therapy I chose to sue them. I began with the office here in Ohio that regulates insurance. Each state has an office that regulates insurance in that state.
I recommend starting with your state's insurance regulatory office. DavidÂ

Roxie-
I have been on SSDI since '98. I first applied through a lawyer who specialized in ssdi (got her name from a tv commercial). Yes, I paid for her services but I was not denied and was also awarded from the time I stopped working.
Several other issues- I am vague on these points so others feel free to correct me.
1) I continually read posts from ssdi applicants who get denied and reapply- I have read that many are denied the first time and you must be persistant.
2) I believe that once you recieve ssdi then return to work you lose ssdi and can not start up again. Please be clear on this point before returning to work.
3) I chose not to return to work though I am 48. I believe that my cancer indicated a fundemental problem with my lifestyle. I chose to change my lifestyle. Now I am fortunate in that my wife can work and we are covered by her health plan. We live a modest lifestyle. I spend my time at a full time dad and I work at staying healthy.

Hi Roxie
My husband was diagnosed with mm in Jan 07 at age 48. He applied for ssdi in July 07, just prior to his autoSCT. He found out his application was approved in the Fall of 07 and started receiving benefits for himself as well as our 3 elementary school aged kids in Jan 08.
He had consulted an attorney in our city who specializes in disability law (2 phone calls only), we haven't received a bill yet though !!
 PatriciaÂ
Thank you everyone for your responses! I feel a lot better now. If we do end up having to consult an attorney it would be well worth it. But at least it sounds like once we cut through all the red tape he should be awarded.
