My mother-in-law was diagnosed of MM almost 8 months ago. This was stage-1 MM. She has been given 6 cycles of Chemotherapy (based on Thaldex). During the second cycle the doctors wanted to insert a chemo port; however after 5 days of the port being inserted she developed DVT. The port was removed but this was a very serious and painful period for 2 weeks. She was taken off chemo for the next 6 weeks. The third cycle started after 6 weeks and then the remaining 3 cycles were completed with a gap of 21 days each. During each chemo cycle - she developed usual symptoms; however in between cycles whe was also catching secondary infections like diahhorea and urine infections.
My question is "Is she a suitable candidate to go for Stem Cell Replacement? (we cannot get her a chemo port inserted due to chances of DVT) and if she goes for the replacement what are the risks and does the disease get cured or prolonged? What is the life expectancy after the SCT"

Vjassal-
I am not an onc nore am I a med professional in any way. I am giving you my opinion.
A stem cell transplant if very hard on one's body. Your mom's mm is only stage 1. A stem cell transplant does not cure mm, it only helps to manage it. There are many studies that say that sct does not help mmers live longer- managing one's mm with individual chemos and complementary therapies may be easier on mom's body and better for managing her mm.
Managing one's disease with chemo therapies like thal/dex, velcade, etc. in addition to many complementary therapies discussed on this list, such as curcumin may be the way to go for your mom.
As for DVT- I manage my chronic blood clot through a combination of supplements- nattokinase, fish oil, curcumin, vit. e, ginko, enzymes-
Good luck-
