A clinical trial of a biologically active metabolite of Vitamin D3 demonstrated an unanticipated reduction of thrombosis in cancer patients. Thrombosis is a serious complication in advanced cancers and affects between 15 and 20 per cent of all cancer patients.

Dr. Peter Venner, medical oncologist at the Alberta Cancer Board's Cross Cancer Institute, presented the finding today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Atlanta, Georgia.

A study presented today demonstrates that a new technique safely and effectively removes blood clots in the body faster, reducing patient risk for pulmonary embolism and disability. The interventional radiology treatment was also shown to have a positive impact on patients’ quality of life, relieving symptoms such as pain and swelling, as well as greatly improving their ability to be active.

(Sodium) Phenylbutyrate

Since 1994 (Sodium) Phenylbutyrate has been used in clinical studies worldwide with hopes of becoming a new potential treatment for cancer. The results of these studies are extremely promising.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens also adjusts the eye's focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away.

Facts About Cataract

This information was developed by the National Eye Institute to help patients and their families search for general information about cataracts. An eye care professional who has examined the patient's eyes and is familiar with his or her medical history is the best person to answer specific questions.

Josephine Tesauro never thought she would live so long. At 92, she is straight backed, firm jawed and vibrantly healthy, living alone in an immaculate brick ranch house high on a hill near McKeesport, a Pittsburgh suburb. She works part time in a hospital gift shop and drives her 1995 white Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera to meetings of her four bridge groups, to church and to the grocery store. She has outlived her husband, who died nine years ago, when he was 84. She has outlived her friends, and she has outlived three of her six brothers.

The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) - supporting research and providing education, advocacy and support for myeloma patients, families, researchers and physicians - said findings from its myeloma DNA bank identified genetic links to bone disease in multiple myeloma, a cancer of cells in the bone marrow, that in some cases can also include bone deterioration. These findings also may both support and explain associations that have been observed between environmental toxins such as dioxins and benzene, and an increased risk for myeloma.

environmental causes of myeloma

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Research from Italy provides new evidence that exposure to the industrial solvent benzene increases a person's risk of developing multiple myeloma.

Dr. Adele Seniori Constantini of the Center for Study and Prevention of Cancer and her colleagues also found an increased risk of chronic lymphoid leukemia with benzene exposure. Two other oil-derived industrial chemicals, xylene and toluene, were also tied to greater chronic lymphoid leukemia risk.

Radiological health expert Daniel Hayes, Ph.D., suggests that a form of vitamin D could be one of our body's main protections against damage from low levels of radiation.

Radiological health expert Daniel Hayes, Ph.D., of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene suggests that a form of vitamin D could be one of our body's main protections against damage from low levels of radiation. Writing in the International Journal of Low Radiation, Hayes explains that calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, may protect us from background radiation and could be used as a safe protective agent before or after a low-level nuclear incident.

Evidence that MGUS is a risk factor for the development of DVT.

It is well appreciated that persons with multiple myeloma have an increased risk of venous thrombosis. More recently, this relative risk has been shown to be increased further in these patients while on therapy with thalidomide and its derivatives. The mechanism of this increased risk for thrombosis has traditionally been attributed to traditional neoplasia risks for thrombosis, such as decreased mobility, surgical procedures, use of chemotherapy, and/or indwelling catheters.

Internationally renowned physician Burzynski to address the UAE's first Anti-Aging Congress

Internationally renowned cancer physician Stanislaw Burzynski will be the keynote speaker at the first ever Dubai Congress on Anti-Aging and Aesthetic Medicine (DCAAAM) at the Dubai World Trade Centre from November 7-9 2008.

Burzynski has been using biologically active peptides, which he calls 'antineoplastons' for the last 30 years, to treat thousands of cancer patients at his Burzynski Clinic in Houston, Texas.

Conclusions The risk of progression from smoldering multiple myeloma to symptomatic disease is related to the proportion of bone marrow plasma cells and the serum monoclonal protein level at diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Background Smoldering (asymptomatic) multiple myeloma is an asymptomatic plasma-cell proliferative disorder associated with a high risk of progression to symptomatic multiple myeloma or amyloidosis. Prognostic factors for the progression and outcome of this disease are unclear.

The evolving use of serum free light chain assays in haematology.

Over the last few years new immunoassays have emerged that allow the measurement of free immunoglobulin light chains (FLCs) in serum to a level of 2-4 mg/l and provide a much greater sensitivity than older methods, such as immunofixation, which is able to detect FLCs at a minimum concentration of 100-150 mg/l. The new FLC assay has enabled the detection of monoclonal protein in some patients with non-secretory myeloma and amyloidosis that were previously undetectable.

Nursing Research Touches People Touched by Cancer

Newswise — May is National Cancer Research Awareness Month, but for nurse researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHUSON), every month is cancer research month. Their innovative studies examine the integration of mind, body, and spirit to help improve the quality of life for individuals of all ages with all types of cancer. Their results not only reshape nursing practice and education but also create new nursing tools and skills that can help ease the physical and emotional effects of a cancer diagnosis for patients and those who love them.

The MMASupport website is an excellent source of information for the myeloma survivor and caregiver alike.

This particular page includes many links that are resources for myeloma survivors.

This is a website where you can search for clinical trials.

This website includes lots of basic information about different treatments and also has a tool for finding clinical trials.

Multiple myeloma patients vary widely in how they respond to treatment

Multiple myeloma patients vary widely in how they respond to treatment, but now researchers at the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences have identified a small subset of genes whose activity could predict high-risk cases and potentially guide therapy in the future.

Seven of the largest pharmaceutical companies have formed a group to develop genetic tests to determine which patients would be at risk from dangerous drug side effects
