Supplementation to manage side effects of conventional chemotherapy

Hepatoxicity caused by chemotherapy can be successfully treated with milk thistle (MT), according to a study of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) published online December 14 in Cancer.

How many cancer survivors suffer and how much do they suffer?

Abstract

Cancer-related pain is a major issue of healthcare systems worldwide. The reported incidence, considering all stages of the disease, is 51%, which can increase to 90% in the advanced and terminal stages. For advanced cancer, pain is moderate to severe in about 40–50% and very severe or excruciating in 25–30% of cases.

Oncs talking to survivors about safety, efficacy and value???

I couldn't hear this video on my computer but the title looked so interesting that I decided to post the video to the forum- Can anyone hear this video?  What do you think?  David

Safety, Efficacy, and …Value??

Life after cancer therapy

A diagnosis of cancer is usually a life-changing event, and helping patients with this realization can be as important as reviewing their physical well-being, says Robert Fisher, MD, a medical oncologist from the Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers, in Longmont, Colorado.

Excessive attention is given to the active treatment of the cancer and not enough on the period that follows, when patients may be struggling with "the burden of survivorship," he suggests in an essay published online June 29 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Epo, Procrit/Epogen, NeoRecormon, Aranesp are ESA's

The huge meta-analysis of individual patient data that confirmed an increased mortality in cancer patients treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) has been published in the May 2 issue of the Lancet.

The researchers analyzed individual data for 13,933 cancer patients participating in 53 trials, and found that ESAs increased the relative risk for mortality by 17%. When they considered only cancer patients who were undergoing chemotherapy (10,441 patients in 38 trials), they found that ESAs increased the relative risk by 10%.

Having oncs recommend exercise is a start...

"Despite the lack of evidence, supplements are used by the majority of cancer patients, Dr. Ulrich said. A recent review found that 64% to 81% of all adult cancer patients in the Untied States take supplements, and 14% to 32% of them started taking them after diagnosis. When asked why, patients said they took supplements "in order to feel better, to enhance their chance of a cure, to retain a sense of control, and to ensure adequate nutrition."

MMers with kidney damage should moderate dose of revlimid

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved safety labeling revisions to provide recommendations for extended-release metoprolol therapy in the setting of pheochromocytoma, lenalidomide dose adjustments for patients with renal impairment, and warnings regarding the risk for central nervous system toxicity with recommended doses of fludarabine.

Reasons?

Cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death worldwide in the year 2010, according to a new edition of the World Cancer Report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Low- and middle-income countries will experience the impact of higher cancer incidence and death rates more sharply than industrialized countries, according to the report. This news is in contrast with another recent report that shows that cancer incidence and death rates for men and women in the United States continue to decline, as reported by Medscape Oncology.

PET scanning particulary important for multiple myeloma

December 2, 2008 — Scanning with positron emission tomography (PET) scanning has an impact on the intended management of patients with cancer in approximately one third of cases, and new data suggest that this impact is consistent across all cancer types.

The results come from the National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR), and the latest data are reported in the December issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

I have to worry about a secondary cancer AND myeloma?

The 5-year survival rate among patients with cancer is now 66%.[1] For childhood cancer, progress in diagnosis and treatment has transformed a once uniformly fatal disease into a group of malignancies that are now curable in most patients. With the increasing use of risk-based high-intensity therapy and the resulting improvement in survival, the number of cancer survivors is growing rapidly[1]; in the United States, the number of cancer survivors.
