Supplementation - Cancer Prevention Supplements & Therapy

Most articles about supplementation and cancer focus on the ability of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to prevent cancer.

As a web site for people affected by multiple myeloma, I am discussing supplementation as a therapy for multiple myeloma- before, during and after various therapies. The term "supplement" refers to vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients and flavanoids- while the medical establishment debates the benefits of supplementation I have made the decision to supplement thoroughly. Please read the articles below to decide for yourself the benefits of supplementing your daily diet.

This article discusses antioxidants taken during and after standard and experimental cancer therapy-

In this review, the author proposes that an active nutritional protocol that includes high doses of multiple dietary antioxidants and their derivatives (vitamin C, {alpha}-tocopheryl succinate, and natural ß-carotene), but not endogenously made antioxidants (glutathione- and antioxidant enzyme-elevating agents), when administered as an adjunct to radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or experimental therapy, may improve its efficacy by increasing tumor response and decreasing toxicity.

Experimental data and limited human studies suggest that use of these nutritional approaches may improve oncologic outcomes and decrease toxicity.

Nutritional Supplementation for Cancer, Part I (original)
This link and several other articles on beating-myeloma.org outline the need for supplementation after a myeloma diagnosis.

In my case, having undergone both high dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy, contracted a blood clot, chemo-brain and lumbosacral plexopathy, I have concluded that supplementation is an important piece of my healing puzzle.

My list of regular supplements are as follows:

My daily broad-spectrum vitamin/ mineral/phytonutrient - antioxidant supplement - is the Nutrilite perfect-pack- While I find that this supplement is more expensive than daily vit.min.combos, I have chosen this supplement because it is fully bioavailable, organic and made from whole foods.

This is a link to a long but thorough article on flavonoids

Over the past decade, scientists have become increasingly interested in the potential for various dietary flavonoids to explain some of the health benefits associated with fruit and vegetable-rich diets. These potential health benefits are being used to promote the consumption of flavonoid-rich foods, beverages and dietary supplements.
